a photographer and a woman, I feel that my family-history has
made enormous impact on my work. In my family, the last 4 generations
(males) have made it into upper-middle class through their grasp
and appreciation of 'the right way - the British way', their command
of English and the choice of appropriate noble (colonial) professions
(govt. service, law, education, medicine, architecture). They
realized the necessity of being photographed at all major 'milestones'
of their lives as soon as the medium became affordable. Those
are the images became evident to construct history of a family
- their social status and their public demeanor...
