A
man sits outside a shebeen ( tavern ) in Alexandra
township at 2 30 am in the morning, after
everybody has gone home. The shebeen is situated
on the ground floor of an eight story flat.
On just about every floor there is someone
selling something of some sort.
More
than one million people living in the two
square mile area with most of them living
on the bread line. There is a shebeen in every
street corner. Most of the men are unemployed
or work part time while the women are domestic
workers. Consuming liquor is one of the escapes
from reality.
