DRIK Picture Library presents the work of twelve Bangladeshi photographers through their images of childhood. The image of a starving child with a begging bowl, an image of passivity, has too often been used. This straitjacketed portrayal has simplified and thereby distorted reality. In the eyes of Bangladeshi photographers, the experience of childhood differs. Children work for a living, they feed their families. Those on their own develop comradeship, they fend for one another. Children play, stare curiously at cameras, participate in public protests. A privileged few get to hold a grownup's caring hand. We strive to create an alternate image of Bangladesh and that of third world nations. It is not a question of displaying an array of images. Rather, to see things differently, to nurture the ability to analyses and to question. That is our quest.
