She is one of the students in Yangon's
school for the blind. Political correctness has not
descended on secular Myanmar and the gentrified phrases
like "visually impaired" or "visually
disadvantaged" do not exist in their vocabulary.
I did not get her name, and assumed she did not know
of my existence. I had broken away from the official
guided tour and hung around where I thought there would
be action, and good light. I moved quietly, but I know
that many of them felt a stranger's presence. I tried
to enter the room where she was training to be a masseuse,
but every time I pried open the hinged door, someone
would rush to shut it. After a while, I gave up and
tried to shoot from the outside. Suddenly, she edged
towards the window, and the backlight was just gorgeous.
