Being born in Bangladesh, a third world country, I had the privilege of witnessing different strata of society and the inherent socio-economic issues that exists. Bangladesh is one of the most crowded places on earth, and there exists a never ending fight for existence for most of the people living here. Families struggle day and night to survive. I was shocked to experience that most of us don’t even care for development of women and their rights. We as human beings can never progress without the upliftment of women in the society. I started as a feature photographer in The Daily Star (a leading English daily in Bangladesh). After my stint at The Daily star, I contributed to another English newspaper The Daily sun, as a Staff Photographer. I am a third year student in the Advanced Program in Photography at PATHSHALA, South Asian Media Academy. In the year 2012, I was nominated for ‘Joop Swart Masterclass’ organized by ‘World Press Photo’ the Netherlands. In the same year I was selected as a finalist in Roberto Villagraz scholarship of Photography – EFTI School of Photography and Image Centre, Madrid, Sapin. My works have been published in different local and international news media like Sunday times Magazine, Fotovisura, UCAN News, The Daily Star, Daily Sun, Daily Jurantor, Daily Ittefaq, Daily Prothom alo, Drik news and also exhibited in many photo exhibitions across the country. My focus is on social issues, rural development, and women rights and development in Bangladesh. Currently I work as staff photographer for Drik picture agency and DrikNEWS an international photo agency based in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Manthan Award is an initiative in India to recognize the best practices to promote digital content creativity in South Asian and Asia Pacific nation states for development. There were overall 33 winners in 16 categories, selected from 470 entries submitted by organisations in 36 countries to this competition.

RVJN has currently trained thirty journalists using the new technology and uses it imaginatively to rewrite old issues faced by media and give voice to rural citizens of Bangladesh. The Network focuses on the disadvantaged representation of women and children in the media sector and generating employment for the district correspondence through sales of the multimedia stories. The topics currently covered include environmental issues, governance, gender issues, human rights, cultural and religious festivals, and livelihood. Over the next three years the trained correspondents are expected to produce multimedia (photography, video, text) stories from the 64 districts of Bangladesh. The stories are distributed by DrikNews.

The training course is an intensive, comprehensive multimedia workshop. The course includes an introduction to the iPod touch, the main device for producing and editing the multimedia visuals, basic video skills, basic audio skills combined with journalism, and news-reporting techniques.

RVJN is a component of the Press Freedom 2.0 programme in Bangladesh and is supported by the World Press Photo. http://www.worldpressphoto.org/news/rural-visual-journalism-network-launched-bangladesh

Dhaka, 2 December, 2012: Drik received the Asia Publishing Award for “Birth Pangs of a Nation” in the “Best Insights into Asian Societies (Non-Fiction) Category” at a Gala award ceremony in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia on 30 November, 2012.

Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir accepted the award on behalf of Drik. She delivered Drik’s acceptance speech, which said:

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Drik today would like to thank the Asia Publishing Committee for this recognition and UNHCR Bangladesh for their support in this endeavor. Thanks are also due to the core team and many others who contributed to the production of this book.

However, this award belongs to the brave and courageous people portrayed in this book and the twenty photographers from Bangladesh, France, India, UK and USA who themselves took risks to document the events.

The Bangladeshi War of Liberation, like all other wars, has a contested history. The number killed, the number raped, the number displaced, are all figures that change depending upon who tells the story. But the visual record is a testament to the resilience, the powerful spirit and dignity of the people who were caught in this war.

It is our wish that the younger generation will be inspired by the powerful spirit and courage of the people of Bangladesh. Coming after 40 years, we remember them today, with both a tear and a smile. Thank you.

The book and the film “The Birth Pangs of a Nation” was produced in 2011 to celebrate 40 years of Bangladesh’s turbulent history and to present a visual map of the birth of a nation.

“It was a great honor to collaborate with the inspiring team at Drik on ‘The Birth Pangs of a Nation’ and we are delighted by this recognition from the Asian Publishing Convention,” Craig Sanders, Representative, UNHCR Representation in Bangladesh, said. “While the images in this book bear witness to the tumultuous events leading up to Bangladesh’s independence, they also tell a powerful human story. We’re grateful if this book in some small way has had an impact.”

The story poignantly unfolds through images by some of the finest photojournalists in the world and personal interviews of photographers, freedom fighters, refugees and care givers. Some of the photographers have long since passed away. Those who are alive recall events as each experienced it, from a particular vantage point. All this made it a unique compilation that adds to the rich fabric of the history of the country.

We Mourn

We at Drik and Pathshala are enormously saddened by Kazi Biplob’s tragic and premature death. The arrival of death is never certain but for one so promising and young it was tragic and has left a significant void amidst us. Biplob was more than just a friend of Drik and Pathshala; he was a talented artist who interacted positively and was very keen to make a significant contribution to the photographic community. Everyone who knew him was touched by his positive spirit. We always welcomed seeing him at Drik and Pathshala.

His passing will not only leave a gap in our lives, but in the hearts of everyone who knew him. Biplob’s memory will be treasured and will always remain deep within us.

Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and friends.

With deepest sympathy,
