International Photo Exhibit in Bangladesh
Drik Picture Library in association with United News of Bangladesh and The Associated Press presents an exhibition of photos from the AP archives from 5-15 October at DRIK gallery, House 58, Road 15A New, Dhanmondi R/A, Dhaka. The gallery is open from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
This traveling exhibit commemorates the 150th anniversary of the AP, a U.S.-based international agency that is the largest news-gathering enterprise in the world. The exhibit, drawn from the book ``Flash! The Associated Press Covers the World,'' includes some of the most enduring news images of the 20th century.
Bangladeshi freedom fighters punishing suspected collaborators. The funeral of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi. Marilyn Monroe vamping in character during the shooting of ``The Seven Year Itch.'' Nelson Mandela emerged from prison to prepare to lead South Africa to multiracial democracy.
Copies of the book are available for sale at the gallery.
In its 150 years, the AP has grown from a small cooperative to a network serving thousands of newspapers, news agencies, and radio and television stations around the world. Its clients include United News of Bangladesh, a major national news agency. UNB celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.
The Drik Picture Library was established in 1989 with the goal of giving photographers and writers in the developing world a chance to portray their people and cultures through their own eyes. Today, its activities include providing Internet access, publication services, and training for young people. Drik opened its gallery in 1993.
