Drik Celebrates 23rd Anniversary

Drik marked 23 years as a distinctive multimedia establishment with a special programme on 4 September, 2012 at 6.00 pm at Drik Gallery, House 58, Road 15 A, Dhanmondi, Dhaka 1209.

A significant feature of the program was Drik’s tribute and honour to Bangladesh’s legendary photographer Golam Kasem Daddy with the fourth in a series of commemorative lectures. This year’s presentation was by artist and curator Wakilur Rahman on Curating contemporary art and art practice in Bangladesh. Honouring Drik with his presence was theNational Geographic photographer and humanitarian Reza Deghati who kept the large number of well wishers present enthralled with his inspiring address.

Shahidul Alam, Managing Director of Drik spoke about Appreciating Fine Art Printsintroducing a unique Vintage Fine Art Print collection from the Drik archives. These rare prints by Bangladesh’s renowned photographers was exhibited at Drik Gallery and is currently available for sale for the first time in Bangladesh.

Drik also presented two very interesting but diverse additional exhibitions.The first Moving News to Digital Platforms showcasedthe unique initiative the Rural Visual Journalism Network. The digital exhibition contained the collected work of district correspondents who used the Apple i-Pod Touch to produce multimedia stories from rural Bangladesh.

The second exhibition was the Majority World’s exhibitionInsider, Outsider?, a photography exhibition that challenges perceptions of the developing world.This was the second showing of this exhibition,which was first held recently at Guardian Gallery in London.  The exhibition included the work of Drik Picture Agency (DPA) photographers A.M. Ahad, Farzana Hossen, M. Anisul Hoque from Bangladesh; Iran’s Shadi Gadrian and Sri Lanka’s Dominic Sansoni among the 17 other featured photographers.
