Internship

Objective

Internships offer a small group of outstanding graduate,  undergraduate-level and freelance photographers and students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to Drik’s work. They are designed to complement photography studies and strengthen multimedia skills with practical experience.

Description

Internships can take place at Drik Picture Library, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Assignments vary greatly in terms of content depending on the needs of the organization but every attempt will be made to match the qualifications and skills of the intern with the needs of Drik.

Internship assignments vary in length according to the availability and academic requirements of the intern, as well as the needs of Drik. Assignments are available on a part-time and full-time basis throughout the year.

Qualifications

Interns are selected on a competitive basis.  Interns must:

  • Demonstrate an interest in the field of photography, multimedia journalism or related field
  • Have written and spoken English and proficiency in Bangla will be an advantage.
  • Have an interest in working in a majority world country, adaptability to varied physical and other environments; a desire to work with and gain the confidence and respect of people from different language, national and cultural backgrounds.
  • Respect for the Drik’s mission statement that defines its mandate:  “to challenge all forms of social inequalities and prejudice, whether based on class, gender, race, religion, sexuality, caste or adherence to norms of physical or mental ability. Drik recognizes the need to counter corporate and western controlled media, and questions western stereotypes of majority world peoples. Its aim is to strengthen majority world media, and provide a platform for media professionals so that they may challenge systems of oppression.”

Financial Issues

Drik does not pay for internships. The costs associated with the latter must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel. Limited number of basic rooms might be available at the Drik Guest House but availability is not guaranteed.
