Tokenizing Marginal Identities

Tokenization refers to the practice of superficially including members of marginalized groups in spaces or activities as a way to showcase diversity and equity without actually giving them real power or agency. In Bangladesh, this practice is often seen in media, cultural, organizational, and political spaces where marginalized identities are tokenized to give the impression of inclusivity and representation.

The politics of tokenizing marginal identities in Bangladesh are complex and multifaceted. On the one hand, tokenization can provide some representation and visibility for marginalized groups who are often ignored or excluded from political discourse. However, tokenization can also perpetuate marginalization by failing to address the underlying issues that prevent marginalized groups from participating fully in political processes.

The session will focus on the ethical and political consequences of tokenization, including its potential to enable oppression and undermine genuine representation and empowerment, while discussing strategies for addressing tokenization and promoting more inclusive and equitable political processes, including the role of advocacy, policy, and grassroots activism.
